Many people often use the terms Holland and the Netherlands interchangeably, but they don't match up exactly. The official name of the northwestern European country is the Netherlands. The name Holland actually refers to two provinces in the western part of the country: North Holland and South Holland. These provinces were once the most important economic and political regions in the country, and the name Holland came to be used as a shorthand for the entire country.
